Privacy policy
Effective November 3, 2026
About this policy
This policy explains how Sorted News ("Sorted", "we", "us") handles personal data on sortednews.app and in the Sorted app for Android and iOS. We follow India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and the Information Technology Act, 2000.
This policy is also available in Urdu. If the two versions differ, the English version applies.
On this website
You can read Sorted without an account, and we show no advertising. We collect:
- Server logs. Our hosting provider, Vercel, keeps standard logs: IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time. We use them for security and to keep the site running, and they are deleted within 30 days.
- Error reports. When you use "Report an error" on a story, we receive the reason you chose, any text you write and the story it is about. We also set a cookie, sorted_device, holding a random number, so we can spot repeated reports. It is kept for one year and is not used for anything else. Please do not put personal details in the text.
- Email. If you write to us, we keep your name, email address and message so we can reply. We do not add you to a mailing list unless you ask.
- Fonts. News pages use fonts stored on our own servers. The About page loads fonts from Google Fonts, so on that page your browser connects to Google's servers.
In the Sorted app
The app is not released yet. When it launches it will collect:
- Reading preferences, such as language, text size and saved stories. These stay on your device.
- Usage events, such as a story being opened, a source link tapped, or a story shared or saved, through Google Firebase Analytics. We look at these in aggregate.
- Crash reports through Firebase Crashlytics: device model, operating system, app version and what the app was doing when it crashed.
- A notification token through Firebase Cloud Messaging, only if you allow notifications, so we can send you news alerts. You can turn notifications off in your phone's settings.
- Account details, only if you choose to create an account.
We will update this section before the app goes live if any of this changes.
How we use data
We use personal data to run and improve Sorted, to reply to you, to review error reports and to keep the service secure. We do not sell personal data, and we do not use it to build advertising profiles.
Our AI systems read news articles to write stories. They are not given readers' personal data.
How long we keep it
Server logs are kept for up to 30 days. Analytics data is kept for 14 months. Error reports and emails are kept for as long as we need them to deal with what they are about, and then deleted. Everything else is kept only as long as we need it for the purposes above, or as the law requires.
Your rights
You can ask us to show you the personal data we hold about you, correct it or delete it, and you can withdraw any consent you have given. Write to the grievance officer below and we will reply within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our reply, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
Children
Sorted is not directed at children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect their personal data.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will post the new version here with a new effective date.
